Education and skills
Schools, further and higher education, training and children’s learning.
Education and skills includes schools, teachers, colleges, apprenticeships, universities and children's learning. An MP might ask for figures on provision, describe a constituency problem in debate, examine proposed legislation or vote on a specific motion. Those actions have different meanings. An answer provides the department's stated information, while a speech gives the member's words in context. A division records a vote on the text before the House; its short title does not establish what happened at a school or why a member voted a particular way.
The Department for Education is a starting point for policy and statistics in England. Education is devolved in other parts of the UK, and local authorities and institutions also make decisions. Commons committees can examine policy and gather evidence without taking the place of ministers or local providers. Records on this page are grouped by published keywords, so a reference to a student or school can appear even where education is a minor part of the item. Check the official question, contribution or motion and its date; look for the relevant jurisdiction and the difference between a proposal, an answer and an enacted change. The links below offer background, not a rating of an MP's work or an account of private casework.
