Neil Shastri-Hurst MP: speeches

4 Jul 2024–3 Jul 2025

How these years work

Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

Speeches

  • 25 Jun 2025 · Nuclear-certified Aircraft Procurement · Hansard source
    More

In response to an earlier question, I was pleased to hear the Minister commit to seeking to compress the timetable between delivery and the in-service date. I believe I heard the Minister say that the delivery date was the back end of the 2020s. Can she confirm the anticipated in-service date?

  • 24 Jun 2025 · China Audit · Hansard source
    More

Given that China represents one of the defining geopolitical challenges of our age, I am somewhat sceptical about reports this morning that this much-touted, long-awaited year-long audit has significantly downgraded that challenge. Under this Government, there has been a significant increase in ministerial engagement and visits with China, a policy that is at best incoherent and at worst incompetent. Given that actions speak louder than words, can the Foreign Secretary confirm that the Prime Minister will no longer be making his proposed trip to China?

  • 16 Jun 2025 · Child Sexual Exploitation: Casey Report · Hansard source
    More

The sexual exploitation of vulnerable children in this country is a stain upon our society, and the victims want not just the truth out but transparency. With that in mind, will the Home Secretary confirm whether the Government asked Baroness Casey to change any elements of her report—yes or no?

  • 9 Jun 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

There appears to be universal support for this damascene conversion by the Government. Last year, they told pensioners that the right course of action was to scrap the winter fuel payment for millions, but they are now telling them that a means-tested system is right, so how can pensioners possibly believe anything that the Government say?

  • 2 Apr 2025 · British Indian Ocean Territory · Hansard source
    More

The Minister will have heard the feelings of the House, so can he provide us with the specific guarantees that the Foreign Secretary has secured in relation to preventing hostile states such as China from increasing their influence in the Chagos islands while we as a nation are still paying for them?

  • 3 Feb 2025 · AstraZeneca · Hansard source
    More

The chief scientific officer has previously stated the importance of this investment in the UK’s pandemic preparedness. In the light of the announcement, what assessment has the Minister made of the impact on the UK’s ability to respond to future pandemics?

  • 16 Jan 2025 · Covid-19 Inquiry · Hansard source
    More

Having served on the frontline during covid, I am acutely aware of the sacrifices made by clinicians, patients and staff. However, when it comes to preparing for any future pandemics, part of the solution is ensuring that we have robust epidemiological research. Could the Minister tell us, in rather more granular detail, what assessment he has made of the current projects commissioned by the Government?

  • 12 Dec 2024 · LGBT Veterans: Etherton Review · Hansard source
    More

I welcome the tone and tenor of the Secretary of State’s speech. I wonder if he could assist the House in setting out the steps that the Government intend to take to ensure the reliability of gathering data about the size of the cohort who are affected and may be eligible for the compensation scheme.

  • 9 Dec 2024 · Syria · Hansard source
    More

No one should grieve the demise of Assad, who was propped up for far too long by Russia and Iran. However, the links of HTS to al-Qaeda mean that the future is far from certain or secure. With that in mind, what steps have the Government taken to promote the rule of law in Syria?

  • 4 Dec 2024 · Support for Veterans · Hansard source
    More

    2. What steps he is taking with Cabinet colleagues to help support veterans in Scotland.

  • 4 Dec 2024 · Support for Veterans · Hansard source
    More

There is significant variability in the provision of veteran services across the nations. What steps is the Secretary of State taking, alongside his Cabinet colleagues, to ensure parity of services across the nations, and in particular in Scotland?

  • 10 Oct 2024 · Chiltern Railways: Capacity · Hansard source
    More

Chiltern Railways has the oldest fleet of any operator at over 30 years of age, and additional capacity is needed to meet the demands of my constituents in Solihull West and Shirley. While I welcome the Department’s commitment to reducing overcrowding by moving more rolling stock to where it is needed in the network, can the Minister expand on the specific steps the Department is taking to reduce overcrowding on the Chiltern main line?

  • 10 Oct 2024 · Chiltern Railways: Capacity · Hansard source
    More

    1. If she will take steps to help expedite the approval of additional trains to increase capacity on Chiltern Railways.

  • 5 Sept 2024 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
    More

T8. Postmasters in my constituency, like many others, have had their lives adversely affected by errors in the Horizon IT system. When does the Secretary of State anticipate that the Horizon shortfall scheme appeal process will be fully operational?

  • 23 Jul 2024 · Fracture Liaison Services · Hansard source
    More

First, I congratulate the Minister and the rest of the Front-Bench team on their appointments. As a former orthopaedic surgeon, I am mindful of the impact of osteoporosis on many of our constituents, including my own in Solihull West and Shirley. In England, more than 67,000 people suffer a fracture every year, and a disproportionate number of those are women. What we do know, however, is that fracture liaison services, where they are delivered well, can prevent many of those fractures. Currently, half of the country has access to such services. The last Conservative Government made a commitment to roll them out to the whole country by 2030. Will the Minister honour that commitment?

  • 23 Jul 2024 · Fracture Liaison Services · Hansard source
    More

    5. Whether he is taking steps to ensure the provision of fracture liaison services in all hospitals.
