Mike Martin MP: speeches

4 Jul 2025–3 Jul 2026

How these years work

Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

Speeches

  • 10 Jun 2026 · Belfast: Violent Disorder · Hansard source
    More

I thank the hon. Member for Belfast South and Mid Down (Claire Hanna) for securing this urgent question, and I thank the Security Minister for his characteristically serious and thoughtful responses. It strikes me that there are three lines of investigation: first, into the abhorrent act on Monday night, and we have a suspect; secondly, into the disorder that we saw last night, and I heard the Minister say that three people have been arrested as suspects; and thirdly, into those who seek to incite violence. Can the Minister confirm that there is that third strand of active investigation—that we are seeking to find the people who incited the violence last week and last night, and who continue to do so?

  • 3 Jun 2026 · Lord Mandelson: Response to Humble Address · Hansard source
    More

I agree with the hon. Lady, as someone who has been through the vetting process repeatedly in the past. Those who attend a vetting interview are told, “The information that you are going to give me is between you and me”—between the subject of the interview and the vetting officer. Of course the ISC is hermetically sealed, but if the person going through the process knows that the information will be given to anyone other than the vetting officer, it makes that person think, “Should I be giving this information?” and that compromises the entire vetting system.

Should I carry a picture of Gladstone?

  • 1 Jun 2026 · Equality Act 2010: Code of Practice · Hansard source
    More

I think it is clear from these exchanges that this is an issue that divides the House, and it also divides the country. There are many different opinions. Will the Minister commit herself to putting the statutory instrument to a vote?

  • 23 Mar 2026 · Ukrainian Refugees: Permanent Settlement · Hansard source
    More

    12. If she will take steps to provide Ukrainian refugees with a route to permanent settlement.

  • 24 Feb 2026 · Online Harm: Child Protection · Hansard source
    More

That is exactly what is happening in Tunbridge Wells. The secondary schools there have moved together to be smartphone-free, and now the primary schools are having that conversation with the parents.

  • 24 Feb 2026 · Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor · Hansard source
    More

On this point about which Departments had which papers, I note that the Humble Address uses the words “including but not confined to”. Surely papers in the royal household that relate to this matter should also come under the scope of the Humble Address. Does my hon. Friend agree?

    More

Will the hon. Gentleman give way?

  • 4 Feb 2026 · Lord Mandelson · Hansard source
    More

The Minister said that Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes were “unforgivable”. Does my hon. Friend think that the Prime Minister appointing said known paedophile was forgivable?

  • 4 Feb 2026 · Lord Mandelson · Hansard source
    More

I thank the right hon. Lady for giving way once again; she is being very generous. What is the point in civil servants doing due diligence if that information is not given to politicians when they make the decisions?

  • 4 Feb 2026 · Lord Mandelson · Hansard source
    More

    Thank you very much.

  • 4 Feb 2026 · Lord Mandelson · Hansard source

This important debate deals with corruption on an international scale, and with women and girls who have been victimised over years. May I ask the hon. Gentleman to lift his eyes above factional Labour politics and to focus on the issues at hand?

  • 2 Feb 2026 · Indefinite Leave to Remain · Hansard source
    More

Will the hon. Member give way?

  • 5 Jan 2026 · Venezuela · Hansard source
    More

The US has abducted the leader of Venezuela yet the Government cannot say whether that is legal or illegal. Let us try an easier one: if the US were to abduct the premier of Greenland, would that be legal or illegal?

  • 15 Jul 2025 · SEND Provision: South-east England · Hansard source
    More

I thank the Minister for her remarks, as well as the shadow Minister, the hon. Member for Reigate (Rebecca Paul), and the Lib Dem spokes- person, my hon. Friend the Member for Surrey Heath (Dr Pinkerton). I thank the hon. Members for East Thanet (Ms Billington), for Strangford (Jim Shannon), for Aylesbury (Laura Kyrke-Smith), for Farnham and Bordon (Gregory Stafford), for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven (Chris Ward), for Chatham and Aylesford (Tristan Osborne), for Bracknell (Peter Swallow), for Worthing West (Dr Cooper) and for Rochester and Strood (Lauren Edwards) for their comments. I also thank my hon. Friends the Members for Horsham (John Milne), for Mid Sussex (Alison Bennett), for Torbay (Steve Darling), for Lewes (James MacCleary) and for Winchester (Dr Chambers). There is a lot of commonality here; this is not a particularly party political issue. I say to the Minister that we all wish her well in these reforms. We want them to work, and we hope that this debate has been constructive in giving her a greater understanding of the issues that our constituents face. Question put and agreed to. Resolved, That this House has considered SEND provision in the South East.
