Melanie Onn MP: speeches

4 Jul 2024–3 Jul 2025

How these years work

Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

  • 29 Apr 2025 · Topical Questions · Hansard source

  • 28 Apr 2025 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
    More

Has the Department made an estimate of how many children with SEND are at risk of losing therapeutic support as a result of the recent changes to the adoption and special guardianship support fund?

  • 22 Apr 2025 · British Steel · Hansard source
    More

I congratulate my hon. Friend the Member for Scunthorpe (Sir Nicholas Dakin) on his tireless advocacy for the steelworkers and his Scunthorpe constituents—it should be recognised. How has the Government’s decision to take control of British Steel been received by the workforce, customers and suppliers?

  • 7 Apr 2025 · Scunthorpe Steelworks · Hansard source
    More

The whole of northern Lincolnshire will feel the brunt of this British Steel decision, should the site close, and I urge Jingye to reconsider the Government’s generous £500 million offer. Support through the Department for Work and Pensions is really welcome but the truth is that people have been leaving British Steel for years because of the cycle of its uncertain future. I welcome the Government’s comment that no options are off the table. In the interim, are the Government considering ordering the raw materials to keep the blast furnaces burning?

  • 4 Mar 2025 · Plan for Neighbourhoods · Hansard source
    More

The two towns in my constituency are delighted to be included on the list of towns that will receive this long-term funding—such certainty has been absent from previous financial commitments—but I am particularly interested in the Government’s arrangements for the future. Under the previous arrangements for town board deals, decisions have been made about putting money into parts of projects that have been left to suffer delay and incur extra costs; in my case, money that had been intended for the library was reallocated. Can my hon. Friend reassure my constituents that there will be an opportunity to review the Government’s arrangements for the new neighbourhood boards?

  • 6 Feb 2025 · Crown Estate Bill [ Lords ] (First sitting) · Hansard source
    More

I beg to ask leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.

  • 6 Feb 2025 · Crown Estate Bill [ Lords ] (Second sitting) · Hansard source
    More

Could the Minister give examples of when the Crown Estate might consider selling the territorial seabed?

  • 30 Jan 2025 · Encouraging Entrepreneurship · Hansard source
    More

What specific support is being provided for women entrepreneurs? They are the driving force behind small businesses in my Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes constituency, and deserve all the support that they can get.

  • 7 Jan 2025 · Crown Estate Bill [Lords] · Hansard source
    More

    Will the Minister give way?

  • 6 Jan 2025 · Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse · Hansard source
    More

I warmly welcome the Home Secretary’s statement, and I look forward to the timeline she will present for implementing the recommendations. In her statement, she mentioned support and belief for victims and survivors. One of the biggest supportive actions she could take is to consider preventing CSE rapists from seeing their children born from these crimes, once they are convicted, as they use access to their children to continue their abuse and to re-victimise the girls whose lives they have already ruined once.

  • 16 Dec 2024 · Royal Mail Takeover · Hansard source
    More

I thank John Kay, my local CWU rep, for showing me around the Fotherby Street depot on Friday morning. It was very good to see my current postie, Nev, there as well. They pointed out that some of the performance issues, including missed deliveries, come down to a lack of staff, which comes down to the two-tier workforce. It is less desirable now to work for Royal Mail. Has the Minister had conversations with Royal Mail, EP and the CWU about moves to end the two-tier workforce?

  • 5 Dec 2024 · Government’s Five Missions · Hansard source
    More

    12. What steps he is taking with Cabinet colleagues to implement the Government’s five missions.

  • 13 Nov 2024 · Kinship Carers · Hansard source
    More

Does my hon. Friend agree that the £44 million and the 10 pilots are a groundbreaking initiative on the part of this Government—something that kinship care families have long awaited and campaigned for? This is just the start, but we cannot have everything that we might want right now.

  • 13 Nov 2024 · Kinship Carers · Hansard source
    More

I congratulate the Minister on securing the DFE as a kinship-friendly employer. There are other employers in the country, such as John Lewis, B&Q and Card Factory, that have done amazing things around kinship care leave. Is any consideration being given to bringing some of those best practice examples together, so that we could roll out, through our Government structures, support to employers to become kinship-friendly?

  • 6 Nov 2024 · Small Boat Crossings · Hansard source
    More

The 23% increase in returns of people who have no right to be here is a really positive step in giving the public confidence in our systems. What measures are in place to continue to ensure that our processes remain robust and that the trajectory of returns continues?

  • 5 Nov 2024 · Future of Fishing · Hansard source
    More

I intervened on the hon. Lady because I had just written down the words “sunlit uplands”. Would she agree that fishermen around the country have been sold down the river on the basis of empty promises and simple solutions that do not exist? There are hon. Members in this debate offering brinkmanship as a solution, but that will not provide the security that fishing communities deserve.

  • 5 Nov 2024 · Future of Fishing · Hansard source
    More

Does the hon. Gentleman think it is easier or harder to undertake those negotiations now that we have left the EU?

    5. What recent assessment her Department has made of the impact of youth services on levels of antisocial behaviour in Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes constituency.

  • 9 Oct 2024 · Renters’ Rights Bill · Hansard source
    More

Could my right hon. Friend clarify whether, under the Bill, landlords and letting agents will be prevented from requiring individuals who do not have all the correct supporting information to pay excessive deposits, which prohibit people from getting secure properties for their families?

  • 5 Sept 2024 · Industrial Strategy · Hansard source
    More

    8. What recent progress his Department has made on introducing an industrial strategy.
