Louise Sandher-Jones MP: speeches

4 Jul 2024–3 Jul 2025

How these years work

Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

Speeches

  • 23 Jun 2025 · Middle East · Hansard source
    More

When there was US offensive action against Iran five years ago, we saw proxy action taken against UK and US personnel deployed in the middle east, where we sadly lost Lance Corporal Brodie Gillon. I do not expect the Foreign Secretary to give me details, but can he assure me that everything is being done to make sure there is adequate force protection for those who are still deployed on behalf of this country?

  • 11 Jun 2025 · British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme · Hansard source
    More

I have heard from many of my constituents affected by the BCSSS, and many are advanced in age so there is a real need for speed. I appreciate the Minister setting out how committed she is to getting this sorted as quickly as possible and would appreciate hearing about any further things she could do to expedite it.

  • 9 Jun 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

I have spoken to many people in North East Derbyshire who, although they acknowledged that we should not give this payment to millionaires, were deeply concerned that the threshold was too low. Can the Minister reassure my constituents that those who are eligible for the payment will not have to apply for it?

  • 2 Apr 2025 · British Indian Ocean Territory · Hansard source
    More

I thank the Minister and his team for their tireless efforts to secure the future of this vital base, which is exactly the right thing to do. Will he assure me that no less than the most robust of security provisions will be in place?

  • 19 Mar 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

I believe it was then suspended, but I thank the right hon. Gentleman for his intervention. In his earlier remarks, he raised the valid point that no Member of this House should be receiving the winter fuel payment, and he spoke about the very poorest in this country facing that payment being taken away. We have protected the very poorest pensioners, but whenever there is a threshold, there will always be people who fall on the other side of it. I and my colleagues have been very aware of people coming to us who need us to help them find alternative sources of help.

  • 19 Mar 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

Sadly, it is a feature of this debate that it is very easy for Members across the Opposition Benches to say, “You shouldn’t do something,” but very difficult to say what should be done instead.

  • 19 Mar 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

My hon. Friend is exactly right. The triple lock is a serious commitment that we are utterly committed to, and it will make a difference to every single pensioner in this country—far more than trying to pretend that we do not face the systemic problems that this country faces.

  • 19 Mar 2025 · Winter Fuel Payment · Hansard source
    More

We can carry on with our history lesson— [ Interruption. ] I am sorry, does the right hon. Member for Herne Bay and Sandwich (Sir Roger Gale) wish to intervene?

  • 26 Feb 2025 · British Indian Ocean Territory · Hansard source
    More

I am reminded of the Annington Homes deal under a previous Conservative Government, but that is not the point of my intervention. If the right hon. Gentleman believes that there was absolutely no reason to have started the negotiations, would he say that the Conservative Government made a mistake in doing so?

  • 26 Feb 2025 · British Indian Ocean Territory · Hansard source
    More

Does the Minister agree that what is important is assuring the security of this base’s future, and that until the Opposition put forward a credible alternative, they should support the Government, who are fixing this issue?

  • 12 Feb 2025 · SEND Provision: Derbyshire · Hansard source
    More

I would like to start by thanking all the previous speakers for their heartfelt contributions. It is clear that this is an issue that affects us all, and I thank my hon. Friend the Member for Amber Valley (Linsey Farnsworth) for securing this important debate. Motion lapsed (Standing Order No. 9( 3 )). Motion made, and Question proposed, That this House do now adjourn.— (Gerald Jones .)

  • 15 Jan 2025 · Foot and Mouth Disease · Hansard source
    More

As a child, I distinctly remember the creeping fear on my family’s farms as foot and mouth moved ever closer. I realised that even as a child, and I feel sick just thinking that we could ever go back there. Many farmers in my constituency have repeatedly raised their concerns over infectious diseases entering the UK. Please can the Minister assure me, and them, that we are doing everything to take this very seriously, and that we have contingency plans in place?

  • 6 Jan 2025 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
    More

The procurement of Ajax wasted hundreds of millions of pounds—money desperately needed in my North East Derbyshire constituency. Can the Minister update me on the progress made in learning the lessons of that failure and implementing the findings of the Sheldon report?

  • 6 Dec 2024 · European Union (Withdrawal Arrangements) Bill · Hansard source
    More

I am listening to my hon. Friend’s speech with interest. Does he agree that his contribution shows that there is space for fulsome debate and important democratic scrutiny of these things that affect our family of nations?

  • 5 Dec 2024 · Plan for Change: Milestones for Mission-led Government · Hansard source
    More

My constituency saw the highest price rises in the country back in August, as a direct result of the Conservatives’ opposition to building the houses that are clearly so desperately wanted and needed in my constituency. Can the Minister assure young people in my constituency, who are desperate to buy their own homes, start families and get on with their lives, that Labour will deliver for them?

  • 4 Dec 2024 · Employer National Insurance Contributions · Hansard source
    More

I am sure that the health team will listen to all and any contributions, and will make a decision. The Labour Government refuse to balance the books on the backs of the poor, workers or people striving for a better life.

  • 14 Oct 2024 · Afghan Special Forces Relocation Review · Hansard source
    More

Having served in the conflict in Afghanistan, I know how vital the work of units such as 333 and 444 was in supporting our troops. Is work currently under way to consider the other specialist units that supported our troops?
