Julie Minns MP: speeches

4 Jul 2024–3 Jul 2025

How these years work

Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

Speeches

  • 4 Jun 2025 · Disadvantaged Communities · Hansard source
    More

On life expectancy, in my constituency, the lives of men and women in the most deprived neighbourhoods are nine years shorter than in the more affluent ones. Does my hon. Friend agree that part of the strategy has to be around narrowing those health inequalities?

  • 2 Jun 2025 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
    More

T8. There is increasing concern in my constituency that a number of Deliveroo riders are subcontracting to unregistered riders, some of whom are working illegally. Will the Minister say what is being done to crack down and ensure that all Deliveroo riders are registered and are not here working illegally?

    More

    11. What steps she is taking to strengthen the Union.

  • 24 Apr 2025 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
    More

T2. Will the Minister join me in congratulating the seven schools in my constituency that launched breakfast clubs this week? Does she agree that breakfast clubs are a fantastic example of this Government’s plan for change and reform of public services in action?

  • 24 Apr 2025 · Emergency Preparedness · Hansard source
    More

I thank the Minister for her response, and I particularly welcome the proposed test of the emergency alert system. The demise of landlines and the switch off of the public switched telephone network means that residents—particularly those in areas that suffer prolonged power outages, such as parts of my Carlisle constituency—now rely on their mobile phones more than ever in emergency events. Does the Minister share my desire to see Ofcom expedite its work on the radio access network resilience project so that we can move towards a position where the networks put in place emergency generators to switch the masts back on in the event of a prolonged power outage?

    3. What steps he is taking to strengthen emergency preparedness.

  • 18 Mar 2025 · Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill · Hansard source
    More

One point that headteachers in my constituency report is that, sadly, too many children with SEND are being offered access rather than inclusion in mainstream settings. Does my hon. Friend agree that we need to get to grips with the SEND crisis that, sadly, we inherited from those on the Opposition Benches?

  • 6 Mar 2025 · Emergency Alert System · Hansard source
    More

    9. What assessment he has made of the effectiveness of the emergency alert system.

  • 12 Nov 2024 · Pubs Code: Guest Beers · Hansard source

I thank the hon. Member for that intervention. I will come later in my speech to other points that the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates is campaigning on. I will make a little more progress. Recently in Cumbria, the Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company closed Cumbria’s principal brewery, Jennings in Cockermouth, and brought to an end 200 years of local brewing. The need to create opportunities for local breweries to sell their local beer to local drinkers in Carlisle is, therefore, more pressing than ever.

    More

I will give way first to my hon. Friend.

  • 12 Nov 2024 · Pubs Code: Guest Beers · Hansard source
    More

I agree with the hon. Gentleman. I have visited and spoken to brewers in my constituency, and they tell me that they just want the chance to compete on a fair basis.

    More

I do welcome that, and I thank my hon. Friend for her intervention.

  • 17 Oct 2024 · Small Rural Communities · Hansard source
    More

    1. What steps the Church of England is taking to support parish life in small rural communities.

  • 16 Oct 2024 · Mobile Phone Reception: Bridgwater · Hansard source
    More

In constituencies such as Bridgwater and Carlisle, poor mobile coverage forces people to rely on their fixed-line services. Does the Minister share my concern that the switch-off of the public switched telephone network will leave constituents unable to access 999 services in the event of an emergency?
