David Burton-Sampson MP: speeches
4 Jul 2025–3 Jul 2026
How these years work
Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

Q8. Happy birthday, Mr Speaker.Last summer, my constituent Ryan Long went to Ibiza on his first lads’ holiday. On his first night, he made what turned out to be a fatal decision when he took an ecstasy pill, and after falling into a coma, he sadly passed away at the age of 18. Since his death, his mum Angie, working with local charity Open Road, has ploughed her grief into campaigning, fundraising and raising awareness of the dangers of drug use, so that no other family has to go through the pain hers has suffered. She joins us in the Public Gallery today. Will the Prime Minister join me in thanking Angie for her dedicated work, and will he meet her to discuss ways in which we can, in Ryan’s name, further raise awareness of the danger of drugs?

On a point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. On 29 April, my hon. Friend the Member for Portsmouth North (Amanda Martin) and the hon. Member for Lewes (James MacCleary) raised a point of order concerning the right hon. Member for Newark (Robert Jenrick) visiting their constituencies without notifying them. In response, Mr Speaker reminded the House of the importance of the courtesy of doing so, but his advice seems to have been ignored. The right hon. Member for Newark shared a post on his social media just last week on a visit to my constituency and did not have the courtesy to notify me either— unlike his boss, the hon. Member for Clacton (Nigel Farage), who visited recently and emailed just as his bus was rolling into the constituency; perhaps he was a little bit lost on his way to Clacton. Madam Deputy Speaker, can you please advise me in relation to this matter concerning the right hon. Member for Newark?

Under the former Conservative leader of Southend city council, who is now the leader of the Reform group, £4 million was budgeted for road and pothole resurfacing works, even though highways engineers had estimated that £6 million was needed just to keep them in the poor condition they were in. I am therefore delighted that the now Labour-led council has increased that funding to £13 million over the past two years, with the help of the Government’s pothole fund, and has put in a full programme of resurfacing works. Does the Leader of the House agree that the council team should be congratulated on getting Southend’s roads and pavements back on track?

My hon. Friend is giving a very interesting speech. In my constituency, Chalkwell station has been waiting an age for further Access for All works to take place, and they are now taking place. Both of my train lines are now in public ownership and working closely with Network Rail. Does he agree that that integration will make this work so much easier moving forward? It will be quicker, slicker and easier for these projects to get going, to the benefit of the commuters.
