Aphra Brandreth MP: speeches
4 Jul 2024–3 Jul 2025
How these years work
Our reporting years run from 4 July to 3 July, starting with the 2024 general election. They are not official parliamentary sessions. Office costs keep IPSA’s April–March financial years. Records may cover only part of a year; a missing record does not mean no work was done.

6. What steps he is taking to support high street businesses.
- 20 May 2025 · UK-EU Summit · Hansard source

I asked the Prime Minister on 7 May to reassure the House that he would not hand over hard-won controls over UK fishing waters in backroom deals with Brussels. In reply, he said: “a better deal…can be had.” —[ Official Report , 7 May 2025; Vol. 766, c. 679.] Does he agree that EU access to our waters until 2038 is only a better deal for Brussels and nothing short of a betrayal of British coastal communities?
- 15 May 2025 · Product Regulation and Metrology Bill [Lords] (Third sitting) · Hansard source
More
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Ms Vaz. I rise in support of new clause 2, which would be an essential and constructive addition to the Bill. It sets out a clear, common-sense purpose to ensure that any actions taken under the Bill not only improve product regulation and metrology but ensure that we do so while upholding the United Kingdom’s regulatory autonomy and competitiveness. Some members of the Committee may ask why a purpose clause is necessary, but I argue that the new clause would do something quite fundamental. It would place sensible and proportionate boundaries on what is otherwise a very broad piece of legislation. In other words, it would limit the scope of the Bill. Without something like this, Ministers will effectively be handed sweeping discretion to use the powers in any number of ways, possibly including alignment with EU rules without full parliamentary debate or scrutiny. We all want regulation that works in the UK’s interests, but we must also ensure that those decisions are made here, transparently and with proper oversight.
- 14 May 2025 · Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill · Hansard source
More
Ear cropping in dogs is a cruel and clinically unnecessary procedure, and is illegal in the UK. The shadow Minister has long campaigned to raise awareness of that. Does he agree that images of dogs with cropped ears have been normalised, and that many owners are still unaware of the cruelty of the practice, so we must continue to highlight its impact?
- 13 May 2025 · Product Regulation and Metrology Bill [Lords] (Second sitting) · Hansard source
More
It is still not entirely clear from subsection (3)(c) and (d) what that “something” is. Rather than just referring to those provisions, will the Minister clarify what “something” means, instead of referring it back to the relevant authorities, when we still do not know exactly what they will be required to enforce?
- 13 May 2025 · Product Regulation and Metrology Bill [Lords] (Second sitting) · Hansard source

The point is that we want to be forward-looking, and our concern is that this provision is very much backward-looking. My hon. Friends have talked about future trading partners and things like the CPTPP—things we might miss out on by being backward-looking. Does the hon. Member agree?
- 7 May 2025 · Engagements · Hansard source

Q12. With the so-called EU-UK reset summit less than two weeks away, will the Prime Minister reassure the House that he will not hand over any British sovereign powers, particularly the hard-won controls over our UK fishing waters, in backroom deals with Brussels?
- 30 Apr 2025 · Family Farms: Impact of Spring Statement · Hansard source
More
3. What assessment she has made of the potential impact of the spring statement 2025 on family farms in Wales.
- 26 Feb 2025 · Family Businesses · Hansard source
More
For some family businesses like those in my constituency, their main competitors are international companies. Does my hon. Friend agree that the Government have not considered how increasing costs for UK businesses are making some of our family businesses less competitive?
- 17 Dec 2024 · National Insurance Contributions (Secondary Class 1 Contributions) Bill · Hansard source
More
That is another important point, about yet another group who will be badly impacted by these ill thought-through changes. I urge the Government to think again, and to back these very necessary amendments.
- 16 Dec 2024 · Topical Questions · Hansard source
More
My inspirational constituent, Bells Lewers, has terminal bowel cancer. When she was first undergoing treatment, she was initially turned down for personal independence payment, despite the significant impact on her ability to work and carry out basic daily activities. Has the Minister considered incorporating clinical diagnosis alongside function in eligibility assessments, and will he meet Bells to discuss the assessment process?
- 16 Oct 2024 · Project Gigabit: Chester South and Eddisbury · Hansard source
More
6. What steps he is taking to roll out Project Gigabit in the Chester South and Eddisbury constituency.
