Speeches
- 18 Dec 2025 · Christmas Adjournment · Hansard source
More
Does the right hon. Member agree that remand is not punishment? It is not meant to break bodies or silence dissent, yet we are witnessing conditions so severe that these young people feel driven to risk death simply to be heard.
- 17 Dec 2025 · Local Government Finance · Hansard source
More
I welcome the Government’s funding formula, but I would like to bring to the Minister’s attention my conversation with my local council leader and its chief executive just last week. They are worried that the council cannot afford the spiralling cost of children’s services. For one particular child, the cost is £25,000 a week. Councils often have no choice but to rely on private providers at market rates. Will the Minister commit to tackle the cost of private provision, or look into introducing a cap?
- 15 Dec 2025 · NHS: Winter Preparedness · Hansard source
More
Coroners have warned that without change, unsafe pressures and delayed care at Royal Blackburn hospital risk further deaths. Blackburn also has one of the worst GP-patient ratios in the country, with over 3,000 patients per GP, leaving many of my constituents unable to access early care and pushed into A&E out of desperation, not misuse, only to face fear and delay. With winter admissions rising, what targeted support for staffing, bed capacity and GP access will be provided to places such as Blackburn? Does the Secretary of State accept that winter resilience is impossible without fixing primary care in the hardest hit communities, such as Blackburn?
- 15 Dec 2025 · Sudan: Humanitarian Situation · Hansard source
More
I echo the calls from colleagues across the House. Given that we are a signatory to the genocide convention, will the Minister plainly commit to using every lever available to the Government, including our position in the United Nations, to demand an immediate end to the horrific situation unfolding in Sudan?
- 15 Dec 2025 · Violence against Women and Girls Strategy · Hansard source
More
Just last night, a constituent of mine wrote to me as a deeply worried father about violence against women and girls. He cites recent rape statistics and fears that for families such as his with daughters, the risks feel intolerably high and too many offences still go unreported. Will the Minister reassure my constituent that her strategy in tackling violence against women and girls will improve reporting and charge rates, increase deterrence through more severe sentencing and ensure that violence against women and girls, particularly in high prevalence regions, are genuinely considered further?
- 10 Dec 2025 · Kashmir: Self-determination · Hansard source
More
The situation is exactly the same in respect of journalists. Does the Minister agree that journalists must always be allowed access to every part of the world so they can truly document the position, whether in respect of alleged terrorist camps or otherwise?
- 10 Dec 2025 · Seasonal Work · Hansard source
More
I had the pleasure of meeting two risk-takers in my constituency this weekend: Habbak Watches and AutoLab. They are run by people who are simply wanting to grow their businesses and offer chances and opportunities to young people in my town. I have also met many micro and small businesses, all of whom felt neglected and that they were not being offered the support that they deserve. I support the Employment Rights Bill and I support the rights of employees, but I am beginning wonder and worry: are we pitting employers against employees, and vice versa?
- 10 Dec 2025 · AI Safety · Hansard source
More
I just want to reaffirm what the hon. Member has said. Does she agree that innovation and safety are not opposites? This is reminding me of when Google and online banking first came in. We need clear rules so that we can increase public trust and not stifle technology.
- 8 Dec 2025 · Digital ID · Hansard source
More
In respect of the figures, the last time this was tried it was said that it would cost the Government £5.4 billion. Then, when independent organisations came to look at the actual figures, some said that it would cost up to £19 billion. Does the hon. Member agree that inflation goes up, not down?
- 8 Dec 2025 · Digital ID · Hansard source
More
On the topic of migration, does the hon. Member agree that the Government’s claim that digital ID will curb immigration is made a farce by the Afghan data loss, a catastrophic failure of data security that ended up expanding resettlement on a large scale, which shows exactly why centralising identity data can backfire?
- 2 Dec 2025 · Budget Resolutions · Hansard source
More
I have heard from many constituents that things just do not change for them. Does the hon. Gentleman agree that for real change in constituencies like ours, we need a needs-based, targeted funding approach?
- 2 Dec 2025 · Criminal Court Reform · Hansard source
More
I refer to my entry in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests; I am a practising barrister and a law firm owner. Our centuries-old right to jury trial is not an ornament of the past. It is the living guarantee of a fair trial. It is the safeguard that ensures that no citizen is judged except by their peers. It is the cornerstone of our legal heritage, and the bedrock of public confidence in criminal justice. It must not be curtailed for administrative convenience, and let us be clear: curtailing jury trials will not cut the backlog, or, if it does, it will simply shift that backlog straight to the appeal courts. Why, then, have the Government chosen not to prioritise court capacity, judicial recruitment and proper case-management reform, but instead to curtail jury trials?
- 1 Dec 2025 · Budget Resolutions · Hansard source
More
Over 45% of children in Blackburn live in relative poverty. I congratulate the hon. Member on taking a principled stance. He has been proven right, so I thank him on behalf of the children of Blackburn.
- 1 Dec 2025 · Budget Resolutions · Hansard source
More
Does the hon. Member agree that, in working-class towns such as Blackburn, where years of under-investment have taken a real toll, only targeted, needs-based funding will bring down the cost of living and lift real economic growth?
- 24 Nov 2025 · Gaza: Humanitarian Obligations · Hansard source
More
I recognise what the hon. Member says about past actions, but blocking food is also a war crime—does he agree?
- 24 Nov 2025 · Gaza: Humanitarian Obligations · Hansard source
More
Does the hon. Member agree that it should be the Palestinians who determine how Gaza is reconstructed, that a Palestinian body should select which companies get which contracts, and that all the reconstruction contracts should be properly accounted for and delivered to a proper standard?
- 24 Nov 2025 · Gaza: Humanitarian Obligations · Hansard source
More
May I add that 603 people from Blackburn also signed the petition? Every Friday, my constituents come out in the cold, the heat or the rain—whatever the climate—to remember the people of Gaza. I remind the House, the Minister and the Government that this is the first livestreamed genocide, and people will not forget it easily. They will continue to press us, as their representatives, and the Government until this catastrophe comes to an end.
- 24 Nov 2025 · Gaza: Humanitarian Obligations · Hansard source
More
I reiterate the right hon. Gentleman’s words: we cannot speak of recovery without first seeking and speaking of justice and accountability. Does he agree that all alleged breaches of international law, including accusations of genocide, must be investigated; that those responsible must be held to account; and that the people of Gaza deserve not only immediate relief but a future built on justice? Does he agree that peace is impossible without justice?
- 18 Nov 2025 · Warm Homes Plan · Hansard source
More
Will the Minister give way?
- 18 Nov 2025 · Points of Order · Hansard source
More
On a point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. May I seek your guidance, please? This is the second occasion on which I have sought to contribute to discussion of this extremely important and urgent matter, and have not been called to speak. I fully appreciate the pressures of time and the number of Members wishing to contribute. However, given both the significance of the subject and the contributions that I had prepared on behalf of my constituents, may I ask for your advice on how I can ensure that I am able to take part, and be heard, during future debates on this topic?
- 17 Nov 2025 · Asylum Policy · Hansard source
More
Stripping people of the very few belongings that they have left after fleeing war and persecution runs contrary to the very principle of asylum, which is rooted in protection and compassion. How do such measures help address the real root causes of displacement and the refugee crisis, which are war, destabilisation and persecution, and dangerous crossings?
- 17 Nov 2025 · Asylum Policy · Hansard source
More
On a point of order, Madam Deputy Speaker. After my earlier intervention, the Home Secretary stated that she “should not be surprised to see the hon. Gentleman indulging in misinformation” in here. I take my responsibilities in this House extremely seriously. I am confident that every point I have raised was made in good faith, based on publicly available information, and was neither misleading nor inaccurate. May I therefore seek your guidance on how a Member may respond, or have the record clarified, when a Minister makes such characterisation without providing any evidence, clarification or correction, in particular where it risks implying dishonesty on the part of a Member who had no opportunity to respond further at that moment?
- 21 Oct 2025 · Mandatory Digital ID · Hansard source
More
The Minister says that we are “custodians of democracy”. On the back of that, and in the light of his comments, I ask this: will the Government commit to a direct vote in the House, a free vote on the digital ID scheme before it is rolled out and becomes mandatory in any form? The public and their elected representatives deserve clarity and choice.
- 20 Oct 2025 · Post-16 Education and Skills Strategy · Hansard source
More
I welcome the statement. In Blackburn I have been working with our college and jobcentre to help young people access real opportunities, but in towns such as mine, which is among the most deprived in the country, it is not talent but investment that is lacking. What strategy will the Secretary of State employ to ensure that skills funding truly reaches places such as Blackburn, and will she meet me to discuss the serious shortage of ESOL spaces, which is causing many constituents to wait for up to a year, out of work?
- 20 Oct 2025 · Maccabi Tel Aviv FC: Away Fans Ban · Hansard source
More
